“Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles—watching the birds change color and fall from the trees.” Welcome to the autumn issue of Westside Notes. Once again it's Fall Foliage time back east, and we recently experienced our usual October heat wave here in Southern California. Even though I've been away from the East Coast for almost 25 years, I still hold the crispness of the air and the autumn colors fondly in my heart. The sentimental, nostalgic part of me may always long for the more pronounced, authentic change of seasons although Los Angeles is now the place I call home.
Seeking New Associate:
It was the spring of 1992, and my career and my life changed overnight when I met my mentors, Cindy Busto, LCSW and Jody Frank, LCSW at West Coast Counseling Center. They were not only my clinical supervisors for many years, but also mentors who showed me the ropes of private practice. Today I'm fortunate enough to have talented, conscientious associates in my practice, and nowadays I have the privilege to give back what I was once given.
Please pass on this information to anyone you know or who may know of someone looking for a private practice internship:
Part-time, post-graduate position available for MSW associate or MFT intern. Addictions experience required. Less than 1000 hours toward licensure preferred. email resumé to andrew@westsidetherapist.com.
Part-time Office Space Currently, I have office space available in my Overland Suite if you're looking for 4-hour blocks, 1/2 days or full days. As many of you know, we are first-generation tenants (2008) in a very comfortable, professional, stylish space that was designed by therapists for therapists. It's a centrally-located, Cheviot Hills-adjacent (3 blocks from the Westside Pavilion), 2-story modern "duplex" so please contact me if you or any of your colleagues may be interested.
Resource of the
Month: Several years ago I made a conscious decision to advance my group trainings, and it's resulted in the birth of a co-ed therapy group which has been meeting for two years as well as my two recent male interns forming men's groups. After twenty years of leading groups, I find myself continuing to deepen my role as group therapist which has infused brand-new vitality into my groups as a direct result of my involvement with both our local organization (Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles—www.gpala.org) and our national organization (AGPA—www.agpa.org). In February 2013 I'll be in New Orleans for the weeklong annual meeting which is full of clinical opportunities as well as socializing and networking with both national and international group therapists. I invite all of you to consider joining me either locally at GPALA events or nationally at AGPA events. It's been a fun, sometimes-humbling leg of the clinical journey, and I'm so deeply grateful for the expansion and rejuvenation of the work.
